Hanna Diamond on Josephine Baker’s Secret War

This is the story of wartime and intelligence work in France and North Africa. Josephine Baker (1906-1975) made her name dancing on the Parisian stage in the years between the wars. When war broke out in 1939, she decided not to return to the United States but turned spy for the French secret service. She exploited her celebrity to make a significant contribution to the Allied war effort, including serving in the French Air Force in 1944-45.

Hanna Diamond is Professor of French History at Cardiff University. She is an expert on the social and cultural history of France during WWII. She is author of Fleeing Hitler: France 1940.
